The screenshots below represents the third generation of this web
site, that we have been maintaining for a group of friends since
April 2000. The Rainbow Demons Squadron is a group of people playing
Combat Flight Simulator games over the Internet.
With the third generation, the entire site is driven by a database.
Different levels of access have been included. For example, the
"Commanding Officers" of the virtual squadron have administrative
access over the database tables through a complete administrative
center. They can maintain the memberships to the squadron, promote
pilots (and demote them sometimes!), update the training schedule,
the ranks, the news and the events sections, and more.
The site contains about 100 different pages. The evolution of the
site has progressively introduced more advanced technologies.
Generation 1: basic HTML and some JavaScript, no logic in the design,
pages prepared by different members with various "web"
skills, no logic in the navigation.
Generation 2: design and maintenance centralized and realized by
GM Software, introduction of CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), JavaScript-based
drop-down menus, navigation rethought and vastly improved. More
consistence in design for new pages.
Generation 3: generalization of CSS, introduction of dynamic content
with a database-driven web site, DHTML, multiple-level drop-down
menus, single look-and-feel through the entire site while preserving
the main design criteria: variety in colors. The variety in color
is very important to the group, because of their name. "Rainbow"
is part of the group's identity.
The first screenshot below represent the home page. The second
represents the maintenance of the training schedule.
